The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been very central in pop culture for almost a decade and as a result, many people of different ages have grown attached to these fictional characters. Avengers: Endgame was the build-up of twenty-two movies over the last eleven years. The anticipation for the movie was even more prevalent through social media and the inclusion of Avengers: Infinity War (the prelude to Endgame) on Netflix. Buying tickets were also very difficult because of the influx of people trying to buy their tickets at the same time and eventually bringing the website to a halt. I waited on a virtual line for almost two hours to buy tickets. The need to find out what the Avengers were going to do next was becoming widespread.
At the theater, it was very clear who was there to see Endgame and who was just there casually, since it was the opening day of the film. Many people were wearing marvels clothes, like shirts, sweaters, and hats. I wore a white shirt with the faces of Marvel characters on the arms. Some people even dressed their kids in Avengers onesies to show further support for their heroes. People who were not going to watch endgame would just idly see what other movies were playing. While waiting for a friend, I noticed other people doing the same thing, waiting for their friends to show up to head inside the theater together. I also noticed people taking pictures with the Endgame poster outside of the theater. The biggest surprise came from the different kinds of people that came to watch the movie. People as young as toddlers to as old as grandparents all looked excited to see their favorite heroes on the big screen for potentially the last time.
On the way inside of the theater, I overheard someone saying that they were not going to buy any water since it was a three-hour movie. I found it interesting and realized how dedicated some people were to watch this movie. I used their strategy and I started hoarding paper napkins because I had a nasty cold and got weird looks because of all the papers I took, after explaining why I did it, those people were very understanding. Waiting for the movie to start took much longer than I expected it to. Usually, it is about twenty minutes of trailers before the movie begins, but since Endgame was so popular, people used this as an excuse to advertise much more aggressively than usual and I got out of the movie much later than I expected to because of the forty minutes of trailers. It was understandable since the movie would make someone a lot of money and the theater was using it as an asset.
When the movie started, I expected my theater to be much louder than it actually was. For some reason, the back of the theater was much louder than the front when something comical or eventful happened on screen. Only two people in the front were audibly shocked or excited (including me), but towards the end of the movie, more people started joining in and making the experience of watching the film much more enjoyable. Towards the end of the movie, apparently, a lady next to my friend came into the theater with a reusable bottle filled with wine, I looked over, but it was too difficult to tell if she was actually drinking. It was somewhat unsettling to see but I would not blame her since many of the events of the movie were emotional. After watching the movie, I felt conflicted because of the ending of the film, but I also felt very happy since everyone in the theater had very similar expression as to my friends and mines. People did not talk much, there were just small conversations here and there, but people did seem contempt towards the ending of the movie. I know that people will still admire these fictional characters much more after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Reflection
Writing this paper was a bit strange since I was so accustomed to the subculture, but became very ill a couple of days before the event. When the day finally came, I was very reserved and would much prefer to be home and use up all the paper napkins my heart and stuffed nose desired. Because of mentality, I most likely missed more subtle details about the people around me. I only noticed the obvious, like peoples vocal reactions and expressions, but I had the opportunity to see what people were feeling from a person to person basis. The observation portion of the paper was also a bit weird for me. Normally I would just observe in
